Avatar: The Way of Water raises more questions about Pandora than it answers. One of the coolest novelties we see in the movie is Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), and not just her mysterious origins, but her ability to communicate with Avatar Eywa. Kiri is possibly one of the most interesting and least-explained Na’vi in the entire series. She seems to have the ability to plug directly into the planet and feel the heartbeat of the world. Her powers seem like they’ll be important, even though we’re only getting a glimpse of them.

Kiri in The Way of Water is a character that looks like she’ll play a major role in Avatar 3. There is a lot to ponder about her, and even more that has yet to be revealed. She’s possibly one of the most important characters just set up for an Avatar sequel. Kiri’s birth connects her deeply to Eywa and the rest of the planet, and we’ve seen some of her abilities used to fend off the human invasion. So who is Eywa Avatar? Is Kiri the Eywa?
Avatar Eywa
1. Who is Avatar Eywa?
In James Cameron’s 2009 film “Avatar,” the character Eywa is the goddess of the planet Pandora and the embodiment of its interconnected ecosystem. The Na’vi, the indigenous humanoid species of Pandora, worship Eywa as a god and believe that she is responsible for maintaining the balance of life on their planet. The character plays an important role in the story, as the protagonist, Jake Sully, eventually comes to understand the importance of Eywa and the interconnectedness of all living things on Pandora.

In the story, the planet Pandora has a unique way of communicating where all the life forms are able to communicate through a network called the “neural network” which is basically a huge wireless network of all the life forms on the planet. All the life forms in Pandora can communicate with each other by sending chemical or electric signals over this network. The tree of Souls, the most sacred tree on the planet serves as the node of the network, its roots interconnect the neural network to the ground.
The character of Eywa is thus symbolic of the interconnectedness and balance of nature, and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the environment.
2. Kiri’s mysterious connection to Eywa
Kiri, in addition to being one of the most interesting characters in The Way of Water, also has an important role in the plot when it comes to being born. It’s hard to remember all of 2009, but fans who’ve watched Avatar again will remember that Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver‘s character) died at the end of the film. The Na’vi tried to transfer her consciousness from her human body to her avatar. As they gathered around the tree of souls, the roots of the Eywa Avatar reached Dr. Augustine and her avatar and began to glow. Although the Na’vi chanted and the process seemed to be working for a moment, Grace died and her figure was returned to the human lab.

But in The Way of Water, we discover that Grace’s avatar is mysteriously pregnant after her death, and no one knows who the child’s father is. Thus, Kiri was born. Many fans think she’s just a psychic, but Kiri’s connection to Eywa may be related to this “failed” attempt to transfer Dr. Augustine’s consciousness. Fan theories suggest that Grace may not have died but has become part of Eywa. That means her consciousness is not transferred to her avatar, but still lives in the center of the soul tree. The theory continues that this was when Grace was pregnant and that Eywa was Kiri’s father.
That transformation of consciousness does not happen exactly like Jake‘s (Sam Worthington) but is created through an energy transfer, creating another body that is not quite Dr. Augustine and not entirely who is different. The reason Kiri feels close to Eywa is that Pandora’s great soul is a part of her in such a unique way. If the rumors were true, no Na’vi or other human, not even Jake Sully, would be this close to Eywa.

3. Is Kiri the Eywa?
The big question is why Eywa decided to give Grace a twin.
- Kiri is considered to be the container for Grace’s soul as an adult. If Kiri is Grace’s twin like Tommy is to Jake, then she might be compatible with Grace’s soul. She can erase her consciousness to give Grace a new chance. This is very grim but will create an interesting dilemma.
- Kiri is said to become the Eywa of Earth. Kiri would be some kind of clone in Eywa’s consciousness and would come to Earth to initiate some sort of process of connecting with what was left of the essence there. It may take her sacrifice to work, creating another dilemma.

- Kiri is the embodiment of Eywa’s immune response. Her ability to control creatures in Pandora is very similar to what happened in the first movie, but this time is controlled by a single creature. It might make her a sort of mythical creature among the Na’vi.
- Grace makes her own avatar pregnant and creates a monster. She could have created an embryo with a much stronger connection to Eywa to better understand the phenomenon behind consciousness, but in doing so, she actually created a whole being. power. This is more about her origins.
Everything will probably be answered in Avatar 3, the audience will get an answer that can satisfy them.
